  • Prune late-summer-flowering shrubs such as buddleia and caryopteris, removing all but 5cm (2 inches) of last season's growth. Prune frost sensitive shrubs such as fuschia ana lavatera. Also prune after flowering forsythia, ribes and early-flowering clematis.
  • Check young shoots for greenfly. Rub off, or spray with Zeneca (ICI) Rapid.
  • Guide climbers along supports.

Perennials and Bulbs:
  • Lift and divide herbaceous perennials.
  • If buying new perennials, choose those with a long flowering period. Among the best are low-growing Viola Cornuta (April-October), Scabious 'Butterfly Blue' (May-September), and taller growing Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant' (June-October), Geranium 'Russell Prichard' (June-October) and Rudbeckia Fulgida 'Goldsturm' (June-October).
