The distant drone of lawnmowers, rained-out barbecues, hosepipe bans and fateful cricket tours are all synonymous with the Great British Summer...So are colourful pots, hanging baskets, containers and fantastic instant summer colour!
Mark Anderson of Anderson Landscapes takes you through some suggestions to give your garden an instant lift with colourful containers and pots.

The origins of container gardening can be traced backed to the ancient Egyptians, who appear on wall and tomb paintings, tending their potted plants. The ancient Greeks were also keen container gardeners, growing their favourite plants in pots for use in medicine or cooking.

By the first century AD, the Romans had mastered the skills of container culture and were perfecting the art of topiary.
Though pots were a familiar feature of gardens in the Middle Ages, it wasn't until the Italian Renaissance that they really made their mark.
In the late 17th century, the influence of Italian, Dutch and French container styles really made a big impact on British gardens, as wealthy folk brought back souvenirs from their Grand Tours of European cities. Ornate and extravagant containers, filled with exotic greens or simply displayed on their own, were all the rage.
