Top Tips for Pots and Containers
- When choosing patio plants, look for ones with healthy, undamaged
leaves adn stems. Don't buy any that are growing in bone dry compost
- regular watering is critical to keep young plants healthy - but
avoid ones that are growing in waterlogged compost.
- Buy plants with 'F1'written after their name on the label. These
are more expensive than other patio plants, but they tend to produce
better displays of flowers and have a neater shape. Avoid buying
tall, straggly plant - they have either been grown too close
together or left in the garden centre too long.
- Watering can be time-consuming if you have lots of containers. You
can save time by lining patio pots and hanging baskets with a sheet
of black polythene when you plant them up. This reduces evaporation.
Larger containers are less prone to drying out. Automatic watering
systems which enable you to 'plumb in' your baskets to an outside
tap which is turned on and off by a timer is useful for when you are
away.
